How do babies develop food allergies?
I am unsure why it is recommended to wait to feed babies certain things. Does exposing certain foods to babies make them develop the allergy or is the babie’s digestive system simply not ready for the food? For example if I feed my son eggs at 7 months and he has a reaction, would he have had the reaction if I had waited until he was 2 years? Also, if the reactions are simply based on age and I give him a food too soon causing a reaction, is the allergy permanent? Would I be able to try the food later? Lastly is there a reason why foods like strawberries in a stage 2 baby food would be safe to try rather than if I pureed strawberries myself? Is it the cooking process or would it still cause allergies? Whew! Long question!
Certain foods can cause an immune response in the child and thus an allergy.
Egg White is after 1 year. Egg White contains difficult to digest proteins. The yolk is VERY good for babies though.
Peanuts, Strawberries, Honey[causes botulism] are other no no’s.
Cereal and grains believe it or not are also allergens.
“Babies produce only small amounts of amylase, needed for the digestion of grains, and are not fully equipped to handle cereals, especially wheat, before the age of one year. (Some experts prohibit all grains before the age of two.) Baby’s small intestine mostly produces one enzyme for carbohydrates—lactase, for the digestion of lactose. (Raw milk also contains lactase.) Many doctors have warned that feeding cereal grains too early can lead to grain allergies later on. Baby’s earliest solid foods should be animal foods as his digestive system, although immature, is better equipped to supply enzymes for digestion of fats and proteins rather than carbohydrates”
