my 7 week old daughter has been constipated for 3 days but for the last 3 weeks shes been constipated the only way she will go to the bathroom is if i give her prune juice her poop is dark green and hard and she screams every time she grunts i was wondering what is normal for a baby to poop is it once a day or more often she is formula fed and can i give her prune juice everyday and if so how much??? i tried karo syrup but that hasnt helped yet!!??

This type of constipation is usually just a phase. While switching formula might help, it could also make things worse. Giving her intestinal tract time to adjust is the best advice.

As for normal bowel habits, it varies from baby to baby. Some go every time they eat, some only go maybe 2 times a week. All babies (even breastfed) will eventually go through a phase where the stool starts to become more formed. This is probably what your baby is going through and so she really probably just needs time.

I usually recommend a little apple, pear, or prune juice (2oz once or twice daily) to relieve the symptoms of constipation. Start by mixing half and half with water, but can be given full strength if needed. If this and Karo don’t work, then talk to the doctor. There are medications (like lactulose) which can be prescribed (as a last resort) which are perfectly safe.

Castor oil could make her vomit. Giving any oil by mouth is never recommended for children under 1 year old due to the risk of aspiration and chemical pneumonia.
