babies watching baby einstein
Baby Einstein/Mozart/Van Gogh etc, which do you think is best?

I’d like to buy my friend’s newborn baby one of the DVD from the Baby Einstein series with the intention of the baby watching it when it’s a bit older (say from 3months upwards)

Which one would you reccommend? There are tons!

Has anyone used them? Did they do any good? Was baby captivated by them? Which, if any, would you reccomend??

Thanks in advance!

None of them! Those are bad — they have been shown to cause developmental delays in babies!

Baby DVDs, videos may hinder, not help, infants’ language development

“Despite marketing claims, parents who want to give their infants a boost in learning language probably should limit the amount of time they expose their children to DVDs and videos such as “Baby Einstein” and “Brainy Baby.”

Rather than helping babies, the over-use of such productions actually may slow down infants eight to 16 months of age when it comes to acquiring vocabulary, according to a new study by researchers at the University of Washington and Seattle Children’s Hospital Research Institute.

The scientists found that for every hour per day spent watching baby DVDs and videos, infants understood an average of six to eight fewer words than infants who did not watch them.”

Doctors also say babies should not watch any TV before age 2. “according to the guidelines, children under age 2 should have no “screen time” (TV, DVDs or videotapes, computers, or video games) at all. During the first 2 years, a critical time for brain development, TV can get in the way of exploring, learning, and spending time interacting and playing with parents and others, which helps young children develop the skills they need to grow cognitively, physically, socially, and emotionally.” http://www.kidshealth.org/parent/positive/family/tv_affects_child.html
And watching TV is linked to ADHD in kids. http://www.mindfully.org/Health/2004/ADHD-TV-Link5apr04.htm “Researchers have found that every hour preschoolers watch television each day boosts their chances—by about 10 percent—of developing attention deficit problems later in life.
The findings back up previous research showing that television can shorten attention spans and support American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations that youngsters under age 2 not watch television.”
