babies upper respiratory infection

babies upper respiratory infection
baby rat with respiratory infection….baytril?

My rats both have an upper respiratory infection. last friday the vet put them on Baytril and De oxycycline for 10 days.
I just read that you aren’t supposed to give baytril to rats under 3 months. Mine are about 2 months old, more or less.
Should I stop giving it to them?

It’s not recommended to give baytril to rats under 3 months old, as it’s supposed to effect the development of cartlidge and stunt their growth. However, there is no scientific evidence that this is in fact true. In any case it is more important to cure the illness and save your rat’s lifes than to worry over the possible long term effects, especially where myco is involved !!

If you wish you can discuss alternative treatments with your vet, both tylan and zithromax have been shown to be very effective in treating resp infs in young rats. Have a read of this chart, educate yourself then educate your vet ;)

Echinacea is a natural herb that can be used to boost the immune system, so the rat can control the myco, it won’t cure the respiratory infection itself. It’s wonderful stuff, I use it myself with my rats :)

Rats of ANY age can have myco flare-ups.
