babies on airplanes tips

Can anyone give me advice for flying on an airplane with a baby?
I have never been on a plane, or even in an airport. In a few months I have to take a plane from “Nanaimo” to “Vancouver” then another plane to “Whitehorse”. The worst part is I have to take my 8 month old daughter and my 4 yr old daughter with me by myself…and I’m terrified!!!!!
My questions are,,,,can you take a stroller and how does that work?
Whats a good type of stroller to take?
What about the carseat…can I take that? because I’ll need it when I arrive.
Any other tips or advice??
I’ve traveled many times with my kids, several times with them by myself.
Yes, you can take a stroller. I’ve taken umbrella strollers, full strollers, and even double strollers. I would take the stroller that you think will be easiest for you to manage, and will be easiest for you at your destination as well. Sometimes a small umbrella is all you want, while other times you want the storage and convenience of a bigger one. I assume your 4-year-old will walk, so you won’t need a double.
You can use the stroller right up to the airplane door. You will “gate check” in there – leave it at the door, where it will be taken down to the hold before takeoff and then brought back up upon landing. It will be waiting for you outside the door of the plane when you arrive at your destination.
If you are booking a seat for your infant, you can and should use the carseat. If you are planning to keep her on your lap, then you will have to check the carseat as baggage. I have been able to do this at the gate in the past, particularly when it was the infant seat that went with the stroller travel system. Also, if the plane is not full they will often allow you to take the carseat on board and use an empty seat at no extra charge.
Other tips:
*Pack your older daughter a small backpack of new things to keep her occupied. I usually pack coloring books, sticker books, Play-Doh, small Magna-Doodle toys, little figurines, etc. I take them out one at a time as they seem to be getting bored.
*Pack snacks – airline snacks aren’t usually things kids want to eat
*You could bring a portable DVD player for movies
*Pack more diapers, wipes, formula, baby food, etc than you think you will need. You don’t want to be stuck without those things if you get delayed
*Pack extra clothes for the baby
*Have the children sucking on something or drinking something at takeoff and landing, which helps relieve ear pressure. It can be a pacifier, bottle, cup, sucker, etc.
*Don’t be afraid to ask the flight attendant for help!
