babies not eating solid food

Baby eating solid foods..?
My son just turned 4 months on the 14th of this month. His pediatrician said it was okay to begin feeding him solid foods now. My mother-in-law have him little spoonfuls of banana today (not gerber banana, the fruit itself). Not only that, but she had a slice of an apple and put it by his mouth for him to taste it by only licking it. Is it okay for him to have little tastefuls of apples and little spoonfuls of bananas with them being whole fruit, not gerber?
My mother-in-law wants to feed him cooked fruits and vegetables and potato already but he’s not ready for that yet right?? I just want to give him infant rice cereal to start but my mother-in-law is sort of pushing all these other foods towards him.
And now that my son can have cereal at least, can he now begin to have gerber too?

She was very very VERY pushy about giving my daughter foods right away (4 1/2 Months) that seemed a little to big for her, but even through all my resistance she still kept doing it. One day when she was babysitting my daughter ended up choking on a piece of Banana that was to big for her. It was the scariest thing I have ever been through. When i spoke o my pediatrician about it at her next day checkup he said that not only is it hazordous but that their little digestive systems arent ready for it yet, and that the wrong foods to soon can leave a lasting impressions on their little tummys to soon. Baby food is more broken down in the areas they need it to be so it much much easier on their little tummys ![]()
If she insists on still giving it to your little one even through your resisting you could always try a little white lie (Doctor said no…yada yada) or if that doesnt work a company called “Munchkin” makes a food grinder that may put your mind at ease a little bit. They sell them at both target and walmart.
I let my baby put her tounge on just about every thing since she was just about a month old. Never anything to swallow, but just seeing her face light up after I dipped the tip of my finger in Macaroni & Cheese with little tastes is priceless ![]()
My advice when it comes to the cereal is try one thing at a time. We started with just 2 teaspoons of cereal mixed with formula before bedtime just to get our little one started and get him used to solid foods. Then when she seemed comfortable enough introduced some Gerber “1″ veggies & fruits. Starting with one feeding a day (plus the cereal at night) usualy for lunch time. They say to try the same veggie or fruit a couple days in row to introduce the taste to baby and to make sure baby isnt allergic to that type of food. My daughter right now is still on “1′s” and we do a small jar of fruit in the moring with a bottle for breakfast. Then just a regular bottle feeding at her next time. Then a small jar of veggies for lunch with a bottle. Then regular feeding. Then cereal with a bottle for bedtime. It seems to be working great. Dont worry if its a little frustrating at first. We ended up having to sneek a little tiny bit of bannas in my daughters cereal because she didnt like the taste of it plain.
My doc says the rule of thumb for moving on to “2′s” is 1 month after your baby has begun to sit upright by themselves.
I know this was long but I promise its great advice ![]()
Hope it helps& good luck!
