babies natural immunity

At what point are you being TOO overprotective of your baby?
It’s natural to want to ensure your baby’s health and wellbeing and put them first at all times. you want to keep everything clean and sanitized, you don’t want random people putting their hands on your baby.
However research has shown that you can actually increase a baby’s chance of illness through taking such measures to an extreme. By not exposing them to normal bacteria levels, they fail to build up a natural immunity to germs. Consequently they can often be MORE sickly.
Do you think this is a problem among some mothers? What are your thoughts?
My sister would always make everyone wash their hands before touching the baby, even after he was a few months old! I told her that keeping things ultra-sterile will probably work against them since they won’t have exposure to germs to build up their immune system.
She stopped the hand-washing rule after that.
Some people believe that our society’s excessive use of antibiotics and sterile products such as hand sanitizers, anti-bacterial soaps, lotions, etc. creates aggravated allergies, super bugs, and drug-resistant bacteria. Bottom line is too much of ANYTHING isn’t a good thing. Even cleanliness. At least that’s what I tell my wife when she wants me to clean up the house…
