i am badly suffering from anxiety and panic attacks?

i am 24 weeks preg and since last month have had bad panic attacks at night which have now spread in to the day coz i think about bed time and sleep and get scared and panicky. I am open to basically trying anything – have tried yoga, acupuncture and one session with psychiatrist nothing really worked. I am joining aqua aerobics tonight was wondering are there any herbal remedies to take was thinking of trying homeopathy and they might give me one or would cognitive behaviour therapy be better where I discuss the underlying probs. I am really distressed by panic attacks now they came from anxiety over an unplanned baby and worries about the birth and how my husband and me will be as a couple – super close now. Also people always saying to me- your house will be a mess, no more hols, going out they paint doom and gloom picture which has increased my anxiety – any advice

First, you need to know it’s not uncommon to experience feelings like this when you’re expecting. Your hormones are all over the chart!

I was being treated for depression and anxiety before I became pregnant with my first. I was fortunate to find a dr. that specialized in depression AND pregnancy. It got worse after my son was born. For some reason, I became more anxious toward the night time and found myself not getting any rest.

DO NOT TAKE HERBS OF ANY KIND!! Not even herbal teas. They can induce premature labour.

If I could offer any kind of helpful advice, it would be to go see your dr immediately! He/she can give you information on resources, groups, counselors, etc to help you through this experience. The aquasize is GREAT! It’s low impact and is probably the best form of exercise for expectant mothers. Have you found a pre natal class for you and your husband to participate in? These classes teach you all about breathing and how to handle your pregnancy/labour/delivery. That can also help relieve any stress you are feeling in anticipation of the baby. Deep belly breathing for 10 – 20 minutes helps too. Long, slow, deep inhalations, hold for 3-5 seconds, then a slow exhalation, expelling all the air from your abdomen. This will help bring you to a calm and relaxing state.

I would also try finding a book on pregnacy (old faithful…What To Expect When You’re Expecting) can help put your mind at ease and help you prepare before and after the baby arrives.

You asked about cognitive therapy. It’s not a bad idea. You can learn coping skills and tools to help you deal with your worries.

As for your house being a mess. Well, it won’t be as tidy as you might like it. This is a time when you can learn to let go of things that are not as important. When you have a child, you just adapt to readjusting and prioritizing. However, if a messy house is worrying you, ask your friends or family to help you with household chores. I’m sure they will only be too happy to help you cope. If it can lift the burden from your shoulders, don’t be afraid to ask those who love and care about you for help! Get them together before the baby arrives and let them know how this is affecting you.
