If you do take it out, the tongue will not take 6 months – 1 year to heal. It begins to close up, after 3 hours.

Pros of tongue piercings;
It looks great, it’s fun to play with, healing time is short, etc.
Overall it’s a great piercing to have.

Cons of tongue piercings;
If you go to an inexperienced piercer, they could do some permanent damage to do with nerves, and the two veins in your tongue.
It’ll be harder to get a job, but you could always wear a retainer (clear tongue bar) in it while working and for interviews, etc.
It swells for up to a week after having it done, for some people you get massive lisps for a bit, others it’s just mildly uncomfortable.

Procedure for a tongue piercing;
They sit you down, ask you to stick out your tongue and look at it, to see if the two veins running through it, will interfere with your piercing.
They then mark it, and ask if you like the placement.
Next are the clamps, which don’t hurt, like people say.
They then push the needle through, and the jewellery will follow.
Screw on the ball and you’re done.

Aftercare;
Rinse your mouth with non-alcoholic mouthwash and/or saltwater after eating.
It should heal after 2 weeks, in which you can go back to your piercer and get a shorter bar. (They pierce with longer ones at first, so your tongue has room for swelling).
4 weeks after you get it pierced, you can change it by yourself.

Pain;
2/10. Your tongues a muscle, so if you keep it relaxed and not tense, the needle slides through easily, giving minimum pain.
Just like a small pinch to be honest, the swelling was the worst part for me.

Pros for a cartilage piercing;
Pretty much the same as the tongue, it looks great :) .

Cons for a cartilage piercing;
You can’t sleep on the side you got it done for a while, as it’s sore and tender.
It takes anywhere from 4 months – 1 year for it to fully heal. But you can change the jewellery during this time. My piercer told me it was best to wait 5 months.

Procedure;
They sit you down, and mark your ear, asking if you like the placement.
Then slide the hollow needle through, followed by the jewellery and you’re done!
NOTE: Some piercers like Claires, etc. use guns for piercing cartilage. DO NOT get your cartilage pierced with a gun, it can shatter your cartilage, make it more likely to get infected and ruin your ear. Guns are only safe for use on lobes, but even then it’s best to use a needle.

Aftercare;
Rinse with saltwater when you wake up, and before you go to bed.
Twist it once or twice a day, but don’t continually play with it or this will prolong the healing period.
Don’t touch it unless you’ve cleaned your hands. It’s best to touch it as little as possible, it’ll heal faster this way.
If you’ve got long hair, you should tie it up as much as possible, especially when sleeping, or it may get tangled up with the back of the piercing. And believe me, getting it off hurts.

Pain;
4/10. Hurt slightly more than tongue, but the pain for this one only lasts a couple of minutes and it’s soon gone, like when you get your lobes pierced.

Like you, I hate pain, but the two piercings you want are worth it, they don’t even hurt that much, which suprised me!
Both of these piercings are worth getting done, they’re both beautiful and intrigueing in their own ways.
If you want them, get them!
Good luck xx

woahh baby, repiercing my cartilage.
